OUR LABOUR OF LOVE

Call us suckers. Call us crazy. But I prefer to say we rescued a grand old house from crumbling into oblivion—or, even better, from being flattened to make way for another soulless multi-unit complex. Would we recommend spending six years of your life restoring a house? Absolutely not. Not if you have a full-time job, a family, or even a single hobby. Trust us, this kind of madness isn’t for the faint of heart.

After two decades of bringing clients’ homes back to life, Chris and I figured—why not take on a BIG renovation of our own? A passion project. A living, breathing showcase of our skills. Think of it as a “look book” for future clients, proof that we don’t just understand old houses—we speak their language. So, come along for the ride and flip through our slideshow journey…

“Do we play the long game and continue to rent it? Or do we dress it up, finish some big projects, and send it to market? That was the debate when we first met our clients. But let’s be honest—it was clear they were tilting toward selling. Why? Life changes. But also, a property management company had suggested slapping laminate composite over the original wood floors to hike up the rent. Yes, laminate. Over hardwood. It’s like putting a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. These owners, however, weren’t having it.

A house bequeathed to a Church

In legal-speak, leaving assets or property in a will is called a “bequest.” But this wasn’t just any bequest—it was a heartfelt gift from a homeowner to their local church, a big thank-you note wrapped in siding and shingles. Then came the real leap of faith: the church trusted Chris and me to take on the makeover mission.
Our marching orders? Turn this house from drab to fab, make it sparkle with joy, and keep it livable—without blowing the budget. In other words, we had to give it a full glow-up without maxing out the piggy bank. Challenge accepted! We know how to do that.

Dubbed Georgia. For the Lady THat She IS

This cozy little house became a nurturing nest, cradling a school-weary daughter as she landed and transformed. Here, she unpacked her twenties and poured herself into the earth—digging, planting, and scattering seeds. The backyard transformed into a verdant haven, vibrant with life and stories. Shattered ceramics found new purpose, while glass bottles & sculptures stood sentinel along the edges. Like all nests, that are meant to hold for a temporary amount of time, when it became time to fledge, in came the call. “Can you get her market ready?”

Picture this: a house as a melody, and this one’s the dubbed “Good Living On Repeat.” Matt, our seller, is the quintessential front-porch troubadour—beer in hand, grin on his face, casually strumming about his life-well lived.
Flashback to 2006: when I first introduced Matt to this gem, it looked like a rogue Easter egg drenched in lilac and turquoise. But there it was, tempting with its siren call: “Good Bones,” “Near Hip Chicks Do Wine,” and the ever-so-irresistible, “Needs Only TLC.” For an architect like Matt, it was love at first renovation.

Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our clients say:

When my wife and I decided to sell our house, we started looking around for real estate representation. We landed on Tracy Dau and Chris Speth at Like Kind Realty after several people recommended them, and it was 100% the right call. Our 1913 house had some lovely features but also needed some TLC before the sale. Tracy and Chris were able to prioritize the work, bring in excellent tradespeople when needed, and spend hours working right alongside me and my wife to paint, wallpaper, and highlight the details that would drive the sale. With their help and guidance, we were able to enter the market at a higher price than we originally expected, review several offers, and sign off on a deal that met both our and the buyer’s requirements. Given their knowledge, communication, and on-the-ground experience in the Portland market (particularly our lovely historical houses), we would not hesitate to recommend Tracy and Chris to anyone looking to navigate their home sale.

It is 10 years this month that I bought and moved into my house. I was reflecting about that time and all that has transpired and manifested since. I am filled with gratitude for the love and support that you provided to help me realize my desire. This house IS my temple, sanctuary, and sacred place. Thank you for being there and guiding me to make it happen.

—Alison

Tracy is an absolute Jewel. I was very impressed by how she so enthusiastically helped us get our house ready to sell, even painting several rooms for us and doing numerous other tasks to help us get our house ready (it was a big job and needed a lot of work). We really relied on her expertise (expertise not only in the real estate market but in the remodeling process itself) throughout our journey to selling our 1913 home and it really paid off when our house sold for way above market and in the middle of winter! I recommend Tracy wholeheartedly. You will not be disappointed if you put your faith in her!

—Meigan Madden

Tracy is an expert in the Portland market.

We have sold and bought with her and would definitely work with her again if we end up buying in Portland.

— Keith Robinson

I am so grateful to Tracy for her incredible kindness and expertise in selling my home. From the very beginning, she made me feel like a priority, always taking the time to listen to my concerns and providing thoughtful guidance every step of the way. Not only is Tracy highly knowledgeable about the real estate market, but her extensive network of trusted contractors made the necessary repairs and improvements effortless. She also went above and beyond helping me with the projects I chose to do myself. I was able to sell my home quickly, and throughout the entire process she made me feel supported and confident. If you’re looking for a realtor who combines deep knowledge with genuine kindness, I cannot recommend Tracy enough.
