OUR LABOUR OF LOVE

Call us suckers. Call us crazy. But I prefer to say we rescued a grand old house from crumbling into oblivion—or, even better, from being flattened to make way for a soulless multi-plex.

After 20 years reviving clients’ homes, Chris and I thought—why not tackle our own? A passion project. A living showcase of our craft. While we hired out the mechanical work & big stuff, our hands shaped every inch of this space. Future clients, consider this your “look book”—proof that we don’t just understand old houses; we speak their language. Flip through and join our journey!

Rent or sell? That was the debate when we met our clients—but let’s be honest, they were leaning toward selling. Life changes, sure, but also? A property manager suggested covering the original hardwood with laminate. Like a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. These owners weren’t having it. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work as a team.

A house bequeathed to a Church

In legal-speak, leaving assets or property in a will is called a “bequest.” But this wasn’t just any bequest—it was a heartfelt gift from a homeowner to their local church, a big thank-you note wrapped in siding and shingles. Then came the real leap of faith: the church trusted Chris and me to take on the makeover mission.
Our marching orders? Turn this house from drab to fab, make it sparkle with joy, and make it more livable—without blowing the budget.

Dubbed Georgia. For the Lady THat She IS

This cozy little house became a nurturing nest, cradling a school-weary daughter as she landed and transformed. Here, she unpacked her twenties and poured herself into the earth—digging, planting, and scattering seeds. The backyard transformed into a verdant haven, vibrant with life and stories. Shattered ceramics found new purpose, while glass bottles & sculptures stood sentinel along the edges. Like all nests, that are meant to hold for a temporary amount of time, when it became time to fledge, in came the call. “Can you get her market ready?”

Picture this: a house as a melody, and this one’s the dubbed “Good Living On Repeat.” Matt, our seller, is the quintessential front-porch troubadour—beer in hand, grin on his face, casually strumming about his life-well lived.
Flashback to 2006: when I first introduced Matt to this gem, it looked like a rogue Easter egg drenched in lilac and turquoise. But there it was, tempting with its siren call: “Good Bones,” “Near Hip Chicks Do Wine,” and the ever-so-irresistible, “Needs Only TLC.” For an architect like Matt, it was love at first renovation.

Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our clients say:

When my wife and I decided to sell our house, we started looking around for real estate representation. We landed on Tracy Dau and Chris Speth at Like Kind Realty after several people recommended them, and it was 100% the right call. Our 1913 house had some lovely features but also needed some TLC before the sale. Tracy and Chris were able to prioritize the work, bring in excellent tradespeople when needed, and spend hours working right alongside me and my wife to paint, wallpaper, and highlight the details that would drive the sale. With their help and guidance, we were able to enter the market at a higher price than we originally expected, review several offers, and sign off on a deal that met both our and the buyer’s requirements. Given their knowledge, communication, and on-the-ground experience in the Portland market (particularly our lovely historical houses), we would not hesitate to recommend Tracy and Chris to anyone looking to navigate their home sale.

It is 10 years this month that I bought and moved into my house. I was reflecting about that time and all that has transpired and manifested since. I am filled with gratitude for the love and support that you provided to help me realize my desire. This house IS my temple, sanctuary, and sacred place. Thank you for being there and guiding me to make it happen.

— Alison

Tracy is an absolute Jewel. I was very impressed by how she so enthusiastically helped us get our house ready to sell, even painting several rooms for us and doing numerous other tasks to help us get our house ready (it was a big job and needed a lot of work). We really relied on her expertise (expertise not only in the real estate market but in the remodeling process itself) throughout our journey to selling our 1913 home and it really paid off when our house sold for way above market and in the middle of winter! I recommend Tracy wholeheartedly. You will not be disappointed if you put your faith in her!

— Meigan Madden

Tracy is an expert in the Portland market.

We have sold and bought with her and would definitely work with her again if we end up buying in Portland.

— Keith Robinson

I am so grateful to Tracy for her incredible kindness and expertise in selling my home. From the very beginning, she made me feel like a priority, always taking the time to listen to my concerns and providing thoughtful guidance every step of the way. Not only is Tracy highly knowledgeable about the real estate market, but her extensive network of trusted contractors made the necessary repairs and improvements effortless. She also went above and beyond helping me with the projects I chose to do myself. I was able to sell my home quickly, and throughout the entire process she made me feel supported and confident. If you’re looking for a realtor who combines deep knowledge with genuine kindness, I cannot recommend Tracy enough.

— Diana Stump

We recently had the good fortune of working with the team of Tracy Dau and Chris Speth to sell our 102 year old home where we lived for 23 years.

We had been slowly sorting and moving things to our new home and when Tracy and Chris did their initial walk through the entire property was in dire need of serious project management to address the accumulation of treasures, projects started and not finished, and cosmetics that had become obvious when the furniture was gone.

Within a matter of days Tracy put her plan in motion – there were tradespeople immediately scheduled to take care of those unfinished projects and Phil and I had a to-do list which we seriously needed. For 52 days Tracy and Chris, tradespeople, Phil and I worked together to make Fowler House sparkle and shine with painting, wallpapering, power washing, dump runs, refinishing fir floors, and problem solving. The transformation was incredible – we almost hated to sell. 3 days after the listing went live we had 3 strong offers – several well above the list price. In less than a month later Fowler House had a new owner.

Tracy not only helped us negotiate the emotions of selling a longtime home and bringing new life to her – but also all the technical details – paperwork, negotiations, communication, problem solving, strategy, deadlines. Her love of old homes and her hands on approach to getting a property prepared for sale is remarkable – she personally hung a really bold wallpaper and she and I covered a wall with grasscloth (a first for both of us). She power washed the exterior, cleaned gutters, washed windows and 2 skylights.

We truly appreciate all that Tracy and Chris did to help us sell our beloved Fowler House and highly recommend them for anyone putting their home up for sale.

— Patti & Phil

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Tracy and Chris on two purchases and two sales, and each experience has only reinforced how skilled and steady they are as partners.

Their confident and ethical negotiation style, combined with their long standing relationships with buyers’ agents, made our most recent sale smooth and stress-free.

What really stood out was their incredible attention to detail, especially with older homes. They knew exactly what to highlight and how to present our property so that it looked its absolute best.

Since we were moving out of town and feeling overwhelmed, we really appreciated how much they took off our plate. They coordinated trusted contractors, handled countless details, and acted quickly whenever something needed to be done to get the home market ready. Their sound judgment, responsiveness, and calm demeanor turned what could have been a stressful experience into something completely manageable. We’re truly grateful for their unwavering support throughout the entire process.
